BARAGA BROADCASTING INC. JANUARY 2008 NEWSLETTER
As the wonders of winter begin to surround and engage us, we extend seasons greetings. May God's entry into our humanity in the person of Jesus bring peace, joy, love and all that is good into your life during this season of Christmas and through the New Year!
Entering 2008, we look at the advances made in 2007. Early in the year we completed construction of our Indian River studio and brought Catholic Radio to you over recently purchased WTCK 90.9 FM and its 600 red hot watts. It was a move beyond sub-carrier broadcast and a time of delight for all of us, as we learned about satellite dishes, T-lines, automation systems, broadcast consoles, effective radiated power and primary coverage contours.
Since communication is our most important product we also completely redesigned and revitalized our website, offering a community calendar, worldwide news and numerous links of Catholic interest.
You may also have noticed our billboard on I-75 and the smaller version of the same, our bumper stickers.
The BARAGA HERALD SOCIETY was introduced, giving a membership card to anyone contributing $100, thus supporting the proclamation, the heralding, of the "good news." The reward for this, besides the out of this world kind, is a 20% discount on all items purchased at the Cross in the Woods Gift Shop. May our HERALDS continue to grow in number, a growth vital to sustaining this service.
In August we began deliberations with Interlochen Public Radio for the purchase of their Mackinaw City translator. A few weeks ago we closed on the purchase, and we are now broadcasting over 95.3 FM. This gives us a primary circle of coverage along the west coast ranging from the Boyne communities to Mackinaw City with a slight reach into Cheboygan. Our mission is to bring Catholic Radio into all areas of the diocese, and we are currently working on the acquisition of another translator station to serve Gaylord. Aiming to extend that circle, in a cooperative venture, our Catholic schools placed bids for licenses in the cities of Alpena, Tawas and Traverse City. It will be some time before we know the outcome of this last venture.
In late September we participated with other Catholic Radio stations across the country in a national Radio-thon. This fund raising effort brought in a little over $5,000, despite being off the air for 8 hours on the second day of the three day event. Telephone lines were cut by construction work on our local snowmobile trail. The event gave us national and further local exposure.
During the last few months we introduced local programming over the noon hour, Gaylord Conversations, hopefully to expand our knowledge of people and happenings in our local Church.
Peace and everything Good!
